Methodology used to evaluate the mixing in laboratory columns by means of image analysis

Abstract:

The effects of the interface between two different porous materials on mixing processes is still an open issue, not only in modeling advective-dispersive transport, but also experimentally. The experimental observations performed in laboratory columns using a conservative tracer by Sternberg (2004) and, later, Berkowitz et al. (2009) showed the effects that heterogeneity has on dispersion, and so the spreading. The main remarks of this studies were that mixing become asymptotic almost instantaneously after a permeability transition (the first) and that there is an accumulation of the tracer in the interface due the perturbation that the latter produce in the flow rate (the second). The effects of this flow rate variance produced by the interface were also studied in the microbial point of view (e.g. Perujo et al., 2017). These latter studies compared the nutrients and the organic matter distribution in depth among different laboratory columns, homogeneously and heterogeneously packed, resulting an accumulation of the organic matter in the transition zones, promoting the degradation. Considering these previous studies, and others more, we want to evaluate the direct effects of the interfaces on mixing in laboratory columns, using a reactive tracer and image analysis. In this seminar we are going to present the methodology we are still using in order to achieve further results
