The Besos Aquifer: Past, Present and Future Challenges.

Abstract:

The Besos Aquifer, located in the region of Catalonia, is a crucial water resource that has played a significant role in sustaining the region's population and supporting various economic activities. This abstract explores the past, present, and future state of the Besos Aquifer, highlighting its historical significance, current challenges, and potential solutions for sustainable water management. In the present, the Besos Aquifer faces several challenges, including increasing groundwater demand to reduce Ter river dependence, climate change impacts, and pollution from industrial and urban activities. These challenges necessitate the implementation of effective water management strategies to ensure the aquifer's long-term sustainability and the well-being of the communities relying on it. To address the current challenges, advanced groundwater modeling is being employed to improve forecasting, and decision-making processes related to the aquifer's management. This seminar emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical context, assessing the current challenges, and implementing sustainable solutions for the future of the Besos Aquifer.
