Tree water uptake dynamics under Mediterranean climate.

Abstract: This study provides ecohydrological insights into the interplay between Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD), Soil Water Potential (SWP), and sap flow rates in trees. Results indicate that sap flow increases with VPD up to a threshold, beyond which it plateaus, revealing a saturation of transpirational response. Additionally, drier soil conditions significantly limit sap flow, pointing out soil moisture’s critical role over atmospheric demand in regulating tree water use. These insights underscore the importance of simultaneous atmospheric and soil moisture considerations in tree water uptake models.
