Project: MUltiscale CHaracterization Of GroUndwater and Solutes discharge into The Ocean (MuchoGusto)
This study site is in the Garraf massif, located SW of Barcelona. Its geology, characterized by calcareous and dolomite rocks covering Palaeozoic materials, has resulted in one of the most important karst systems of the Catalan coast, distinguished by the presence of coastal and/or submarine springs that discharge fresh and brackish water into the Mediterranean Sea.
The natural dynamics of this system have been modified by the high anthropic pressure present in this area. Tourism, urbanization, quarries, cement activities, and the presence of the most important landfill in Barcelona interact with water bodies affecting groundwater quality.

Objetivos
During the last years, different field campaigns, intermediate and local scale field experiments were developed to assess seasonal and spatial variations of the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), and nutrient fluxes by applying an assessment multimethodology in which Amphibious Electrical Resistivity (ERT) geophysical surveys and manual seepages meters are combined.
Impactos
This 2025, our team start with a biogeochemical sampling campaign with the objective of improve the conceptual models and the understanding of these coastal dynamics, quantification of nutrients, and transformation of biogeochemical compounds.
